Allahopetossa autark step 1: the toilet

Spending time on a camping site is quite comfortable (also for the kids) enjoing service like electricity, toilet or a shower. In Germany you find a service called Landvergnügen where you can stay for at least one night at a vineyard, farm or something more “exotic” like an ostric farm or sometime you wanna just stay where you are without any official camping site. For this independency you need a toilet and not just a chemical toilet (for that kind of toilet you need a special place to empty the toilet at least every third day) but something more flexibel. The answer to this is a dry toilet (but NOT a compositing toilet).

This kind of toilet originally comes from Sweden where it is mainly used in the thousend of summer houses without drain system. This technology also found it’s way to campers and caravans and therefor we had to choose between the many solutions on the market. The ready to go version is quite expansive (about 800€ to 1200€). So we decided to built our own toilet and ordered only the basic set (the Separett • Privy 501 toilet seat plus the collecting elements for poo and pee). You can also find some construction kits for almost 500€ but the basic costs only 130€. A good overview can be found here: https://www.meinetrenntoilette.de/.

This solution is autark and makes you independent because the poo you can throw in the normal waste and the pee into the canalization. Or both on the compost. The advantage to the compositing toilet is that with the seperation of poo and pee there is no smell – we’ll see how it works 🙂

Now we only needed something to build in our Separett toilet seat espectively on top of it. We could contruct something but then our old laundry basket from IKEA (which is sold as side table – I just realized ;)) was just perfect for this. I missed to make a picture from our original box so here a picture from wikimedia.

We build in everything although we had top be a little bit creative with the place for the poo/ pee elemts and the tube but finally we had our own toilet in the AllaHopetossa.
